Making Waves Academy Gives Free Books to kids on Read Across America Day!

My Very Own Library, Scholastic Book Fairs, and Matthew Kirby, Celebrate the Gift of Literacy with Making Waves Academy!

Richmond, CA - March 3, 2014 - My Very Own Library (MVOL) literacy initiative and Scholastic Book Fairs celebrated Read Across America Day & Dr. Seuss's birthday at Making Waves Academy (MWA).

The event was the second of three MVOL book fairs happening at Making Waves Academy throughout the school year.

This generously combined effort will carry out their shared goal to encourage and support students' love of reading by providing the opportunity to self-select a series of complimentary NEW books to begin building their own home libraries.

Nearly 2,100 FREE NEW books were selected by students, and more than 7,000 books in total will be taken home by MWA students by summertime.

The school day started with an energetic assembly filled with inspiring words about the importance of literacy from the Middle School Director, Ms. Ward-Jackson and Scholastic Book Fairs representative, David Robinson. Visiting author of the new action-packed spy-thriller children's book series, Quantum League, Matthew Kirby, was the keynote speaker and shared his experiences about being an author and how reading profoundly impacted his life. A dancing "Cat in the Hat" and "Clifford the Big Red Dog" made for a fun finale to the kickoff celebration.

Following the assembly, every scholar at Making Waves Academy visited the MVOL book fair where they were entitled to select three NEW, FREE books of their choice. Several students also enjoyed the opportunity to meet with critically acclaimed guest author, Matthew Kirby, for an interactive presentation, Q&A session, and book signing.

During the evening, a vibrant family literacy event took place at the school where an estimated 1000 family members were in attendance. It began with a potluck dinner held in each advisory classroom and included a variety of literacy and history lessons, as well as hands-on activities held throughout the campus. This proved to be another exciting and inspiring event for MVOL, Scholastic and the Making Waves Community!

Reading

Reading aloud to young children is so critical that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors prescribe reading activities along with other advice given to parents at regular check-ups.
